Fun local kid activities in Myrtle Beach

Local Myrtle Beach Moms Know Best

Whether you are visiting the Myrtle Beach area, also known as the Grand Strand, or you are a new resident, asking longtime residents about the area is always a great idea!

When moving here from ‘up north’, other parents, but especially moms provided us with the best tips and the in-depth knowledge about the area. We learned about the best libraries to take our kids to, the best preschools near our home, the most fun indoor play places and the most affordable places to eat out with kids.

But what about summer activities with kids?

Since it is June and kids will be home for another 10 weeks or so, we want to share some insider mom tips with you!

The Best Beaches For Kids Along The Grand Strand

All Grand Strand beaches are fun for kids. However, there are three beach areas that warrant special mention.

  • Surfside Beach officially became the first autism-friendly travel destination in the world in January 2016.
  • The Myrtle Beach State Park offers more than just beaches! There’s a pier to go fishing on, the little store sells ice cream and the staff offers all sorts of kid programs. If you are local and/or purchase a State Park pass, that same pass will also get you to Huntington Beach State Park for free.
  • Last but not least, The Point at Pawleys Island is a hidden gem! There is little parking available, but that also guarantees it never gets too crowded. The locals will tell you; arrive early, before 10 AM, and plan to stay the day!

Rainy Day Activities in Myrtle Beach

It doesn’t rain a whole lot in our area, but when it does, it’s nice to know there are a few indoor spaces to let the kids burn off energy. Here is our local mom top pick.

  • The Fun Warehouse in Surfside Beach! They offer Go Carts, Laser Tag, Multi-level Soft Playground, Inflatable Slide & Bouncers, Roller Skating, Arcade, Bowling and food, all under one roof!
  • The museum formerly known as the Children’s Museum of South Carolina is now called EdVenture Myrtle Beach! It is small but mighty! Plans to develop and open a new museum in Myrtle Beach, uniquely designed to accommodate families with special needs, are currently under development. This museum is great for those with younger children.

Free Activities in Myrtle Beach

Besides the free beaches, there are several other free activities to check out; the locals will beat you there, but not many tourists will know and thus you’ll be sure to have plenty of space. Here is one well-loved free summer activity in Myrtle Beach!

  • The Grand 14 FREE kids Movies Series is back in 2018! This theater is located at the Market Common. “Affordable fun for the entire family. The Summer Movie Magic program is a collection of family and kid films (typically PG). The programming runs every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 10 AM throughout the summer. The program is perfect for groups, families and others looking for an easy and affordable way to see movies.”

Outside of Town

  • Go Ape in North Myrtle Beach, a fun treetop adventure!
  • The Nexus VR Arcade in North Myrtle Beach, the only one of its kind in our area.

Local Hidden Gems in Myrtle Beach

  • Chapin Memorial Library is a library all on its own. Not part of the Horry County Library system, this library offers amazing kids programs all throughout the year and summer reading programs all summer.
  • Savannah’s Playground in the Market Common area is a brand new playground, but more importantly, it is the South’s first enabling playground!

Water Activities In and Around Myrtle Beach

  • Shark Wake Park in North Myrtle Beach is a fun place to take the kids to learn how to wakeboard!
  • Ocean Watersports in Myrtle Beach offers banana boat rides, parasailing, and jet ski rental. This is a great place for those teens or young adults in your family who want to do something adventurous.

We wish you and yours a fun-filled summer!
